Safety concerns delaying installation of buoy safety lines on UPPCO reservoirs

MARQUETTE, MI— Upper Peninsula Power Company says buoy safety lines will not be installed at the McClure and Dam 3 reservoirs until after Memorial Day.

Officials say significant spring runoff and active spillways are making installation unsafe. While the lines are typically installed prior to Memorial Day, they won’t be put in this year until early June.

UPPCO officials are asking the public to be extra vigilant when recreating on the McClure and Dam 3 reservoirs. Active spillways create stronger-than-normal currents, which prevent the installation of buoy lines used to warn recreationists of nearby hazards.

UPPCO expects to have the lines installed during the first part of June.
