Aquifer breached during Line 5 reroute in WI

Earth-moving machinery at the Marengo River
Northern News Now

MARENGO, WI— Crews rerouting Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline have breached an aquifer near Marengo, Wisconsin.

KBJR-TV says it happened early last week as pipe was being installed underneath the Marengo River. Enbridge says it’s pumping excess water into tanker trucks.

The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission says the breach could affect water levels or cause flooding if the water continues to flow long enough. The Commission notes Enbridge’s work at the site has been sloppy, and has informed Governor Tony Evers and the Wisconsin DNR.

Enbridge says the water flow continues to be monitored and contained, and the company is working with the DNR and other specialists to determine next steps.
