The Hiawatha Music Co-op will once again bring top-quality traditional American music and dance to Marquette for its 34th Annual Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival, July 20-22, at the Marquette Tourist Park.
This year’s mainstage line-up will be something of a guitar summit. Pat Donohue will perform with the Prairie All-Stars, a group that includes many of the musicians heard with Donohue each week on Prairie Home Companion. Another guitar wizard taking the Hiawatha stage will be Dan Crary and his group, Thunderation. Bluesman Ray Bonneville will appear, along with the contemporary old-time-influenced band Pert Near Sandstone. Lumber Jakki, featuring Les Ross Sr., Oren Tikkanen and Randy Seppala will present traditional U.P. lumberjack tunes. Singer/songwriter Ruth Moody will perform, and Cedric Watson and Bijou Creole will bring the sounds of Louisiana to the Festival. The Wild Goose Chase Cloggers will liven up the stage with clogging. Michigan artist Josh Davis and his Band will also appear, and local favorites Jim and Ray will round out the line-up.
The Festival will kick off with the Friday-night dance, starting at 7 p.m., and featuring Lumber Jakki, The Wild Goose Chase Cloggers and their band, and Cedric Watson and Bijou Creole. In addition, most mainstage performers, as well as local and regional musicians, will present small workshops throughout Saturday and Sunday.
In the Teen Scene, Hiawatha’s younger set will enjoy dance and workshop appearances by Dragon Wagon and popular local band Sparrow Tree. Crafts and other activities designed for teens will also be featured.
The youngest Festival-goers will enjoy a busy line-up in the Children’s Area, with child-friendly crafts, workshops, music and stories, the Maypole and the Sunday-afternoon Kids Parade to the main stage.
Another important Festival tradition is the Artists in the Round art and craft show and sale, coordinated by the Oasis Gallery in Marquette. As always, this year’s AITR artisans will offer a wonderful assortment of wares. A variety of food vendors will also be on hand.

Baraga Suite C. That’s just west of the Marquette Food Co-op and the U.P Children’s Museum; (please enter the door across the street from Garden Bouquet and Design). Expanded pre-Festival hours are noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, through July 17. Advance ticket sales will end Tuesday, July 17. Weekend and daily admission tickets will also be available at the gate.
