Dain and Constance Perry: Investigating the slave-trade past of a New England family

The Episcopal Diocese of Northern Michigan is sponsoring a free conference in Marquette this weekend called Weaving a Tapestry of Respect and Dignity: A Focus on Racism and Racial Reconciliation.

The conference features the documentary Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North.  It centers on one Northern family's investigation into its own history of slave trading in the U.S.  Dain and Constance Perry--who are connected to the family--will facilitate a conversation about the film.

Public Radio 90 news director Nicole Walton spoke with them about their experience.

The conference takes place Saturday, 9/26/15, from 9:30 to 4:30 p.m.  It also features Dr. Martin Reinhardt, a professor in the NMU Center for Native American Studies, discussing Native American content in educational materials.

For more information call 228-7160 or email jane@upepiscopal.org

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
