UP200 returns to downtown Marquette this weekend

MARQUETTE, MI— The dogs are raring to go for this year’s UP200 sled dog races, following a two-year hiatus.

The UP200, Midnight Run, and Jack Pine 30 races are set for Friday through Sunday.

UP200 President Darlene Walch says trail crews are putting markers on the courses right now and are reporting favorable conditions.

“They have reported that in the Chatham area, the base on the trails is about two feet deep, and as you head toward Grand Marais for the 200, they have about a three-foot base. So, these trails are looking really good. And the weather this week is perfect for sled dog races.”

Eighteen mushers are currently registered for the UP200, 20 for the Midnight Run, and 11 for the Jack Pine 30. Walch says it’s interesting that a lot of seasoned mushers are coming back to Marquette this year, along with young mushers who haven’t run the races before.

She adds the races could always use a few more volunteers for various jobs. More information is at www.up200.org.
