Water Is Life Festival set for Friday at NMU

MARQUETTE, MI— The NMU Center for Native American Studies is holding Marquette’s first “Water Is Life Festival” on Friday.

The event will bring together Indigenous teachers, local and regional musicians, performance artists, visual and material artists, and grassroots environmental advocates from throughout the U.P.

Activities include a guided cultural trail walk from the Superior Dome to the Dead River at 10 a.m., a panel discussion to discuss the importance of celebrating and protecting waterways and ecosystems in Jamrich Hall, room 1320 at noon, and Hedgcock Art Explorations, featuring canoe painting, at 5 p.m.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
