Stormy weather throws a wrench in two cities' fireworks plans

MANISTIQUE AND ESCANABA, MI— The City of Manistique is once again postponing its Independence Day fireworks display.

Great Lakes Fireworks told the Fourth of July Committee and city officials they were concerned about the weather for Saturday’s event. The company made the determination the display should not take place.

Officials say they honor Great Lakes Fireworks’ experience and will again delay the pyrotechnics.

The event was originally supposed to take place July 5, but the threat of lightning shut it down. It was rescheduled for July 12.

The Fourth of July Committee says it doesn’t want to cancel the fireworks entirely. Officials will look at the remainder of the season and pick a date that coincides with another large public gathering. An announcement will be made as soon as a date is determined.

Meanwhile, the City of Escanaba has canceled fireworks scheduled for Saturday for the same reason. Officials there will also look at another date in the future to hold the display.
