NEGAUNEE, MI— Heikki Lunta is back this weekend, and there’s more than enough snow to support Negaunee’s annual winter festival.
City Manager Nate Heffron says the event aims to remedy cabin fever in the middle of the snowy season, and Negaunee is the perfect place to hold it.
“We made our community more walkable; we have a smaller downtown area. We actually hold our event right in the downtown. We have a lot more flexibility than some other communities, we have a strong-minded DDA that works well with the businesses in wanting to see a successful event in the community. And we have the snow.”
Heffron says the Meijer State Games of Michigan partnered with the Negaunee Downtown Development Authority last year. The Michigan Winter Games opening ceremony takes place Friday at 6 p.m. in downtown Negaunee, featuring the lighting of a cauldron followed by the Irontown Rail Jam.
