UP students advance to national invention competition

National Invention Convention

KEWEENAW PENINSULA, MI— Two elementary students from Baraga have advanced to the National Invention Convention next month, thanks to their creativity and problem-solving skills.

Adelyn Wilson and Allie Johnston recently won two top awards at Invention Convention Michigan, held at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. Their invention, Magic Footsteps, is a tool designed to help young basketball players improve their layup technique.

The project was first in the “Sports, Games, and Toys” category and was also selected for the “Designing and Building Award.” At the state event, students from across Michigan presented original inventions designed to solve real-world problems.

They advanced to the state competition through InventCon, the Keweenaw’s Youth Innovation Showcase. InventCon is organized by Michigan Tech’s Engineering Growth, Development, and Engagement program, and serves as the regional qualifying event for Invention Convention-Michigan.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
