Firefighters continue to battle flames at Menominee warehouse fire

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

MENOMINEE, MI— Fire continues to burn at a Menominee paper mill.

It started last Friday at the Resolute Forest Products warehouse containing pulp and waste paper and spread to two other warehouses.

The Environmental Protection Agency has established a unified command center with city, state, and federal agencies. It’s coordinating with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to sample air and water quality near the scene. No chemical compounds above health screening levels have been detected in the air. The EPA is assisting EGLE and the DNR on surface water sampling at 21 locations for potential run-off from the incident site to the Menominee wastewater treatment plant and adjacent Menominee River.

Officials say they’re in contact with Resolute Forest Products and other industrial tenants of the warehouse to determine what chemicals were present at the time of the fire.

The fire is contained. No deaths or injuries have been reported.
