MENOMINEE, MI— Cleanup at the Menominee warehouse fire is increasing.
Officials say firefighters have been identifying and extinguishing smoldering hot spots and demolition and debris removal is well underway.
The EPA is reducing the number of air monitoring and sampling sites as the potential threat of air impact from the scene continues to diminish. It will, however, continue to evaluate samples for particulate and other volatile organic compounds.
Officials say several million gallons of fire suppression water were collected to prevent runoff of fire-related contaminants to the Menominee River. Construction of a water treatment system to treat the water has begun.
Water samples show levels of toxic PFAS chemicals are below Michigan and Wisconsin health-based standards. The EPA says if future sampling shows results above those standards, further action will be taken, and residents will be notified immediately.
