Fire severely burns Manistique man

MANISTIQUE, MI— A Manistique man has been seriously burned in a house fire.

Sunday around 1:45 a.m., Manistique Public Safety officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Range Street and found the home fully engulfed. Neighbors had already extracted the resident of the house, who was badly burned. He was taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Firefighters from Manistique Public Safety, the Manistique Volunteer Fire Department, Hiawatha Volunteer Fire Department, and Inwood Township Volunteer Fire Departments attacked the fire and kept it from spreading to neighboring houses.

Officials say their efforts were hampered by the proximity of nearby houses and single-digit temperatures, which affected staff and equipment.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a woodstove in the rear portion of the house.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
