RAPID RIVER, MI— A Rapid River man was saved from a burning house by a DNR Conservation Officer and a Michigan State Police trooper last week.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says CO Stephen Butzin and Trooper Shane Weaver arrived at the home on US-2 at the same time Monday and found a woman outside. Both officers entered the smoke-filled house and found her husband inside on a couch. They yelled at the man to move, but he didn’t comply, so Butzin and Weaver carried him outside.

They put the man in the couple’s vehicle and had the wife drive down the road so firefighters could get in. Firefighters found a burning mattress, extinguished the flames, and aired out the house.

The home’s residents were treated at the scene by Masonville Township EMS personnel.

No injuries were reported.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
