Man knocks on windows of house to alert Chassell Township residents of fire

CHASSELL TOWNSHIP, MI— A passerby likely saved the lives Chassell Township residents whose home caught fire.

On August 1 around 2 a.m., Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post responded to Wilson Memorial Drive for a structure fire with reports of people still inside the house.

The person who reported the incident, Gary Steinhoff, said he was driving south on Wilson Memorial Drive when he noticed what he first thought were flames from a campfire. He turned around and realized the front porch of a house was on fire.

Steinhoff called 911 and went past the flames to knock on the front door to notify the homeowners. When no one responded, he knocked on windows until the residents were awake. All the occupants were able to safely jump out of a first-floor window.

The MSP would like to thank Steinhoff for his actions in this incident.

The Chassell Township Fire Department and Hurontown Fire Department extinguished the fire. SEMCO and UPPCO assisted at the scene.

No foul play is suspected in the fire.
