Wildfire danger remains high in the UP

MARQUETTE, MI— Recent rains in the U.P. haven’t done much to reduce the risk of wildfire across the region.

The Department of Natural Resources says warm, dry conditions are boosting fire danger and will elevate risk in areas that received rain in just a few days.

Officials are telling residents to check for burn permits where they live before burning yard debris. They also need to be extra careful with campfires, power equipment, and off-road vehicles to avoid sparking a blaze.

DNR Fire Prevention Specialist Paul Rogers says 26 fires covered 170 acres last week.

Check for permission to burn at Michigan.gov/BurnPermit.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
