Residents evacuated due to neighboring house fire in Escanaba

ESCANABA, MI— Fire has damaged a home in Escanaba.

Department of Public Safety officers were sent Monday around 2:37 p.m. to 801 1st Avenue South on a report of smoke and flames coming from the roof.

Firefighters had to evacuate several people from an apartment complex next to the house, as it also began to catch fire.

Flames at 803 1st Avenue South were quickly brought under control, and adjacent structures received only minor damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Public Safety was assisted by the Ford River Township Fire Department, City of Escanaba Electric Department, City of Escanaba Water Department, the Delta County Sheriff’s Office, DTE, the Red Cross, and Delta County Central Dispatch.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
