Smoke in LSSU buildings clears camps, cancels classes

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— Classes at Lake Superior State University were canceled this week after a power outage produced smoke across campus.

Tuesday evening, the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department responded to automatic fire alarms in multiple buildings. They found that the failure of electrical equipment caused motors to overheat, which led to the smoke.

Campus was evacuated and LSSU Public Safety initiated an hourly fire watch in each building.
Power was fully restored Thursday and campus was cleared for reopening in the afternoon. Officials say all boiler and safety systems have been thoroughly checked.

Classes remain canceled for the rest of the week. LSSU will resume normal operations next week.

The Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department was assisted by Soo Township Fire Department, Chippewa County Central Dispatch, Lake Superior State University Public Safety, the Campus Emergency Response Team, and LSSU Maintenance.
