Red flag warnings in effect for parts of the UP Friday

Sign saying 'wildfire danger high today'

UPPER PENINSULA, MI— Wildfire danger is high to extreme in portions of the Upper Peninsula Friday.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Baraga, Gogebic, southern Houghton, Iron, and Ontonagon counties, and elevated wildfire conditions are present in Keweenaw, northern Houghton, Marquette, and Dickinson counties.

Winds will gust to 30 miles per hour in the warning areas, with temperatures climbing into the upper 70s to lower 80s and humidity hovering between 20 and 30 percent.

The Department of Natural Resources is not issuing any burn permits in the U.P. at this time.

Residents are urged to prevent wildfires by properly discarding cigarettes, keeping vehicles off dry grass, avoiding activities with active flames or sparks, and avoiding power equipment that creates sparks.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
