Ranger III authorized to continue Isle Royale trips

HOUGHTON, MI--   Isle Royale National Park will continue to receive fuel, supplies, and passengers from a ship that’s served the island for more than 50 years.

Senator Carl Levin of Michigan authored a provision under the Coast Guard Reauthorization Bill that will allow the M.V. Ranger III to make trips to the park in Lake Superior.  The provision grants a Park Service request for a waiver from requirements that vessels carrying oil as cargo be double-hulled.

The Ranger III has sailed to Isle Royale since 1958.  It supplies roughly 80,000 gallons of diesel fuel a year needed to generate electricity, fuel law enforcement and search-and-rescue boats, and supply other operations.

The bill has been approved by the House and Senate and heads to the president for his signature.
