LANSING, MI (AP)-- Governor Rick Snyder has signed a law requiring Michigan drivers to replace license plates that are more than 10 years old.
A legislative analysis says the measure signed Tuesday is intended to ensure plates are readable because they can rust and lose reflectivity over time.
Starting in 2015, the Michigan Department of State can't renew any plate that is at least a decade old. It costs $5 to replace a license plate.
The new law sponsored by Republican Representative Wayne Schmidt of Traverse City also requires the secretary of state to submit a report to lawmakers by year's end on the viability of switching from stamped aluminum plates to digitally printed vinyl or plastic plates.
