MADISON, WI (AP)-- The Wisconsin state treasurer position would be eliminated under a constitutional amendment that's headed for a vote in the state Assembly on Tuesday.
The Republican-sponsored measure originally sought to eliminate both the treasurer and secretary of state offices. But it's been amended to only eliminate the treasurer's office.
Republican Rep. Michael Schraa, of Oshkosh, said Wednesday he wants to address eliminating both positions separately so it will be simpler for voters to understand.
Eliminating either constitutional position requires approval by two consecutive legislatures before being put to a statewide vote.
Schraa says the state shouldn't continue to pay to operate the treasurer's office after past legislators have already removed most of its duties.
He says he wouldn't propose an amendment to eliminate the secretary of state position this session.
