LANSING, MI (AP)-- Proponents of a tax increase for road repairs are holding events across Michigan with supportive law enforcers, firefighters, business leaders and top elected officials.
Governor Rick Snyder headlined a Thursday event at a Dearborn fire station to urge passage of Proposal 1 on the May 5 ballot. Similar events were held in Lansing, Grand Rapids and Flint — with more coming Friday in Traverse City and Marquette.
The constitutional amendment would increase the sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent to trigger laws raising $1.3 billion a year more for transportation infrastructure.
Sheriffs say motorists not only need safer roads, but their deputies need safer roads to respond to crimes and crashes.
A group opposing Proposal 1 says voters do not appreciate "threats" about public safety.
