Casperson bill would electrically link U.P. and Lower Peninsula

LANSING, MI--   State Senator Tom Casperson has introduced legislation that would put Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas on the same electric grid.

Under the bill the governor would appoint a state board to select—through a bidding process—a developer to construct a project that meets the policy goals of the legislation.  The siting of the project would need to be approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission.  It would also need to be analyzed by regional transmission organization Midcontinent Independent System Operator.

The cost of the project would be shared by all Michigan ratepayers within MISO.

Casperson says a unified grid would ensure affordable and reliable electricity for all Michiganders.
