LANSING, MI (AP)-- Legislation heading to Governor Rick Snyder would make more offenders eligible for a second chance.
The Senate on Thursday unanimously approved bills changing a law that lets judges sentence 17- to 20-year-olds to a probationary term that will not result in a conviction if they successfully complete a program. The new law would give judges the ability to also sentence 21- to 23-year-olds under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act.
Two bills now go to the governor. Another awaits a final vote from the House.
Snyder is expected to sign the legislation.
Offenders in the program can have their charges dismissed if they complete probation without incident.
