New hospital plan approved by Marquette Planning Commission

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Marquette City Planning Commission has approved the building and site plan for a new UP Health System Marquette hospital.

Duke LifePoint officials hope to break ground on the project in spring of 2016.

Earlier this month the city commission approved the sale of 37 acres, including the Roundhouse property and where the municipal service center now stands.  Duke will pay the city $4 million for the property.

The planning commission heard from the public about the new hospital’s design during hearings Tuesday.  Some people are concerned the extensive use of glass and resulting reflections will have a detrimental effect on birds.

The planning commission approved the plans, with contingencies.  Builders must take energy efficiency and wildlife concerns into account during construction.
