LANSING, MI (AP)-- Legislation would create a license plate that's used to raise money for no-kill animal shelters in Michigan.
The Bay City Times reports the legislation introduced last month by Democratic Rep. Charles Brunner of Bay City would create a fund for such shelters to keep the money the plates take in and disburse it to the Michigan Pet Fund Alliance.
Dee Bishop, former president of the Humane Society of Bay County, raised the idea after seeing license plates available to collect money for other causes.
There currently are more than a dozen such license plates in the state, including ones for lighthouse preservation, environmental issues, veterans’ causes and the Boy Scouts of America. There also are plates to raise money for Michigan's state-supported universities.
