MADISON, WI (AP)-- Democratic Gov.-elect Tony Evers promises to try to work with Republicans when he takes over as governor Monday, saying that voters showed their displeasure with partisan politics when they rejected Gov. Scott Walker.
Evers becomes Wisconsin's 46th governor on Monday. He and other Democrats will be sworn into every statewide constitutional office, the first time that's happened since 1983.
Republicans will maintain their majorities in both the state Senate and Assembly, setting up the potential for gridlock not seen in the state in more than a decade.
Evers tells The Associated Press his inauguration message will be focused on hope for the future and trying bridge the partisan divide.
Evers says he recognizes that he's not liberal enough for some Democrats and also not conservative enough for Republicans.
