Marquette officials talk about increasing property taxes

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission is talking about raising property taxes after a decade of stasis.

Citing a persistent shortfall in revenue, City Manager Karen Kovacs said increasing the property tax rate by 2.6 mills would generate $1.5 million more per year for the city. The average homeowner would see an increase of about $226 per year.

No action was taken by the Commission Monday night. Several commissioners said they’d like public input on the idea before moving forward.
