The Baraga post office named after first woman and Native American legislator

The Mining Journal

(WASHINGTON, DC)— The Baraga post office is now officially named the “Cora Reynolds Anderson Post Office.” President Biden signed the bill into law last week. The legislation, sponsored by Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow, honors the first woman elected to the state House.
Anderson was also the first Native American woman elected to serve in any state legislature. A member of the Ojibwa Tribe, she represented Baraga. Iron, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties starting in 1925. Her work included fighting to recognize Native American fishing rights and combatting the alcoholism and tuberculosis epidemics. In 2001, she was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame for her contributions to society.
