MARQUETTE, MI— The City of Marquette has approved the designation of Third Street and part of Washington Street as a social district.

That would allow licensed business in the district to sell alcohol to patrons, who could drink it in a defined common area.

At a meeting Monday night, commissioners were generally in favor of the Downtown Development Authority’s plan for the social district, saying it would be good for area businesses. Mayor pro tem Sally Davis asked about single-use cups and if they could be recycled. She also expressed concern about potential difficulties the district could create.

DDA executive director Tara Lasse-McKinney said the DDA would work with law enforcement to nip any problems in the bud.

“We have met with the Marquette City Police and talked this over with them and do plan on meeting with them regularly about any potential issues that may arise.”

Lasse-McKinney noted traditional children’s events that take place in the social district—like trick-or-treating—would remain kid-friendly.

District hours would be Monday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Commissioners are recommending the Michigan Liquor Control Commission approve business applications to be part of the social district.
