Marquette's FY24 budget approved

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission unanimously approved the Fiscal Year 2024 budget Monday night.

The general fund balance is $8,242,686. It includes $25.1 million in general fund revenues and $25.8 million in expenditures.

City Manager Karen Kovacs said Marquette will once again operate in a deficit, but if there are no major impacts to next year’s revenue stream, the city should be fine.

“We are able to utilize fund balance… stay within our fund balance policy requirement, which has a floor and has a ceiling on that, a minimum and a maximum, and be able to utilize that for holding steady right now until our revenues become a little bit more stabilized.”

A hike in water and sewer rates is anticipated next year. Kovacs said the average increase per household would amount to about $7.34 per month.

Limited capital outlay funding will be available in the FY24 budget, but maintenance is planned for roads that really need it.

In other action, the commission gave glowing reviews for Kovacs and City Attorney Suzanne Larsen and extended both their terms of employment through September 30th of 2026.
