City of Marquette seeks grant to improve, add bike lanes

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission has approved a resolution supporting a grant application to make the city more bike-friendly.

The $200,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation would allow officials to fully implement and refresh the City Bike Lane and Path plan.

Commissioners Michael Larson and Jenna Smith said biking is a big activity in the city, so it makes sense to move forward with finishing the plan, which has been only partially implemented.

Mayor pro tem Jessica Hanley agreed.

“I know that we’ve had a lot of people here talking about our bike lanes, and it would be amazing if we could get a $200,000 grant to really help us really get those back into shape.”

If the grant is approved, the City will utilize $65,000 from the Lundin corridor fund and $29,000 from the general fund to complete complimentary work.
