Land development code amendments approved in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission has adopted amendments to the city’s land development code.

The City Planning Commission worked for several months to refine the codes and held a public hearing on the amendments in May. At a meeting Monday night, Commissioner Jenna Smith said the new document accommodates changing city needs.

“I am really excited and proud of this document. We’ve done a lot of work on housing, parking, childcare. I know it’s a little tedious to go through, but I would encourage the public to open up the packet and look through all the yellow highlights. You can see all the work. This is how change actually happens in our zoning.”

Also at the meeting, commissioners unanimously approved a request to name the city’s skate park the Nheena Weyer Ittner Skatepark. Ittner was instrumental in coming up with the idea of a permanent skatepark and in the fundraising to make the facility a reality.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
