Hill bill would remove college requirement for corrections officers

LANSING, MI— State Representative Jenn Hill has introduced a bill aimed at helping the staffing crisis at Michigan prisons.

House Bill 5912 would ease education requirements for aspiring corrections officers by eliminating the requirement that they complete 15 credit hours of college. It aims to broaden the pool of potential job applicants and bring additional skilled workers into prisons.

In May of last year, Hill co-sponsored a package of bills that would allow corrections officers to become members of the State Police Retirement System hybrid pension plan.

Hill toured the Baraga Correctional Facility on Tuesday. She met with staff to discuss the crisis and explore potential solutions.

The Michigan Department of Corrections issued a press release Thursday in support of the bill.
