Lawmakers discuss bills designed to keep kids safe online

LANSING, MI— The father of a Marquette teen who took his own life after he was sextorted joined lawmakers Wednesday to talk about bills aimed at protecting kids while they’re online.

John DeMay, father of 17-year-old Jordan DeMay, was in Lansing to highlight two bills sponsored by Representatives John Fitzgerald and Jenn Hill.

Fitzgerald’s bill establishes criminal penalties for those who engage in sextortion. It creates tiered penalties to ensure that repeat offenders face appropriate consequences for their actions.

Hill’s bill mandates collaboration between local school districts, the Michigan Department of Education, Michigan State Police and the Attorney General’s office to implement educational policies on the new law.

Collectively known as “Jordan D’s Law,” the bills await a hearing in the House Committee on Criminal Justice.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
