Houghton City Council passes resolution opposing Trump administration 'overreach'

HOUGHTON, MI— The Houghton City Council approved a resolution this week opposing federal overreach.

The move is in response to the Trump administration’s firing of federal employees in an attempt by the Department of Government Efficiency to identify fraud and eliminate waste.

Councilor Craig Waddell wrote the resolution. He cited government research, the U.S. Constitution, British economist John Maynard Keynes, and examples of how Michigan Technological University uses federal research funding in the document.

The resolution says the council will convey its concerns about executive overreach to representatives in Houghton County, Michigan’s 1st Congressional District, the State of Michigan, and the U.S. Congress.

The resolution passed unanimously. Councilor Mike Needham, who is a federal worker, abstained from voting.

The resolution can be found here.
