LANSING, MI— State Representative Karl Bohnak has introduced a bill that would create a tax exemption for broadband grants.
Various state and federal grant programs have been implemented to encourage broadband providers to connect rural areas of Michigan with reliable internet. However, under Michigan tax law, those grants are considered income and are not tax-exempt.
The legislation would create a tax exemption for all broadband grants. Bohnak says that would ensure a tax-free process for companies and organizations to leverage the grants to increase access to high-speed internet.
