Bills to keep RICE generators going pass MI House

LANSING, MI— The Michigan House has passed legislation to keep the U.P.’s 13 Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine generators operational through the end of their lifecycle in 2049.

Sponsored by Rep. Karl Bohnak, the bills would largely exempt the RICE generators, the energy they produce, and U.P. energy suppliers from new “clean energy” mandates through 2049, when the generators are scheduled to be taken offline.

Bohnak says if they’re forced offline early, U.P. residents would continue to pay both for the generators and whatever energy source takes their place.

The bills now move to the Senate for consideration.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
