Next step taken in Houghton Gateway project

HOUGHTON, MI— The City of Houghton is moving forward with a downtown, mixed-use development called the Gateway Project.

On Wednesday, the Houghton City Council approved a Brownfield plan concurrence for the project, which will be constructed at 902 College Avenue. That’s the current site of the Hodge building, which is scheduled for demolition soon.

The project features new headquarters for Upper Peninsula State Bank Keweenaw and two, 16-unit residential buildings containing condos and rental units.

The total cost of the project is $17.5 million.

Officials say the residential buildings will accommodate the employees from more businesses opening in the area. They also hope to encourage older residents who don’t want to keep up their single-family homes to move into the complexes, potentially opening them up to the housing market.
