Prestin bill would name a portion of US-41 in Spalding Township after army soldier

SPALDING TOWNSHIP, MI— A bill that would designate a stretch of US-41 in Menominee County the “Specialist David Anthony Wilkey Jr. Memorial Highway” passed a state House committee Tuesday.

In 2007, the 22-year-old Wilkey was deployed to Iraq with the 1st Infantry Division. He was killed in the line of duty by an improvised explosive device while serving in Baghdad. Wilkey was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

The bill is sponsored by 108th District Representative Dave Prestin. He says the section of US-41 he’s working to rename is located just south of Powers in Spalding Township, the community where Wilkey grew up.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
