Presque Isle Pavilion nixed as overflow space for unhoused people in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission has decided not to use the Presque Isle Pavilion as an overflow space for unhoused individuals.

In November, officials with Room at the Inn asked to use the Baraga Gym as temporary overnight shelter to accommodate an increase in those seeking shelter. City staff reviewed various aspects of the request and decided the pavilion would be a better option, but realized—along with Room at the Inn—that plan wasn’t feasible, either. Since then, a temporary solution not involving city facilities has been found.

City Manager Karen Kovacs says there’s still a greater need to explore a longer-term solution.

“This is, is certainly something that we all have a responsibility in, and we don’t have, necessarily, the resources as our own, here on the City, and so this is something that cannot fall on one community, it cannot fall on one organization.”

Commissioners voted unanimously Monday night to discontinue working toward a contract to use the pavilion.
