(Lansing, MI) - Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared January as Radon Action Month in Michigan, and is encouraging all Michigan residents to learn more about the environmental hazard and test their homes during this winter’s heating season.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. Long-term exposure to radon increases the risk of developing lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) estimates that radon is responsible for about 20,000 lung cancer deaths in the United States each year.
Residents are encouraged to test their homes for radon every two to five years. Test kits are available at many of Michigan’s local health departments.
