City of Marquette applying for grant for Wilson street pathway

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission is moving forward with a plan to construct a non-motorized pathway along Wilson Street.

Drivers on the east-west roadway often have the sun in their eyes, which makes it dangerous for pedestrians and others on the street.

City staff has met with the Michigan Department of Transportation and is in the process of applying for a grant that would fund up to 80 percent of construction costs. At a meeting Monday night, City Manager Karen Kovacs said it would be extremely difficult to fund the project without the grant.

“Just for context, back in 2025/2026 in the Capitol project listing, this ranked 121 out of 125, unfortunately. Even though we understand that it is one that is very important for this area but also can be heavily utilized. I think we will see that.”

City officials estimate that $117,000 dollars of city funding will be needed at the time of construction. It could be part of the Fiscal Year 2027 or later budgets.

A resolution authorizing the application passed unanimously.
