LANSING, MI— Lawmakers are hoping to establish a state veterans cemetery in the Upper Peninsula.

State Reps. Dave Prestin, Greg Markkanen, and Karl Bohnak have introduced bills in the Michigan House. The plan includes $5.7 million in state funding to support construction and operation of the proposed cemetery, along with a feasibility study to determine the best location within the Upper Peninsula.

The legislation also creates a U.P. veterans cemetery fund to support future operational costs.

The lawmakers say veterans from the Upper Peninsula should be able to be laid to rest in the place they called home.
