Rep. Prestin legislation would implement hunt after gray wolf is delisted from Endangered Species Act

LANSING, MI— State Representative Dave Prestin has introduced a bill that would establish a wolf hunt in the state.

The legislation would require the Department of Natural Resources to implement a hunt within 90 days of the Gray Wolf being delisted from the federal Endangered Species Act. A bill that would delist the wolf has been passed by the U.S. House and has yet to be considered by the Senate.

Prestin says a hunt would "help restore balance to our forests, protect our big game populations, keep our deer camps full, support local economies that rely on hunting, and reduce livestock losses and pet attacks that are becoming far too common.”

Conservation groups and environmentalists say decisions about the Endangered Species Act should be left to biological experts and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
