Fire danger is extreme in the UP and very high in northern Lower Michigan;

Sign saying 'wildfire danger high today'

Undated – The Michigan DNR says fire danger levels across most of the U-P is considered extreme. Officials are offering several tips to follow for safe burning, including: leave yard waste piled for a later day, watching your camp or cooking fire, and making sure the fire is completely out when you’re done. Be careful when using power equipment or off-road vehicles, as heat or sparks can ignite a wildfire.
Paul Rogers, fire prevention specialist with the Michigan DNR says burn permits are closed until the area receives sufficient rain to set back fire danger levels.
Besides low humidity and temperatures reaching into the 80s, gusty winds are expected Thursday. Windborne embers from a fire can fly far and wide, spreading fire fast.
More fire safety information is available at Michigan.gov/FireManagement.
