Marquette has new rules governing the use of micromobility devices on multi-use paths

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission has adopted a new ordinance permitting the use of e-bikes and other electric mobility devices on city multi-use paths.

It would allow the following devices to be used on the paths: wheeled devices used to transport one or more people propelled solely by human power; Class-1, -2, and -3 e-bikes; electric skateboards, scooters, and one-wheels; and all other wheeled devices powered solely by human power and an electric motor not greater than 750 watts.

The ordinance also prohibits reckless riding. To those who were worried kids would disrupt others on the bike path, Marquette Mayor Paul Schloegel said everyone needs to learn how to behave in public areas.

“Education starts at home for this, and if your child is underage or not mentally able to understand what it means to operate a device in a safe and responsible manner, then don’t put him in that position.”

The ordinance also prohibits users from riding devices on sidewalks throughout much of the Downtown Development District.

It was adopted by a 6-0 vote at a special meeting Tuesday night.
