Child abuse prevention the purpose of new Copper Country center

HOUGHTON, MI— The Keweenaw is getting part of $1.9 million in state funding to establish a resource center to prevent child abuse and neglect.

The Keweenaw Family Resource Center will serve as one of six pilot sites in Michigan. Funding comes from Children Trust Michigan and the Children’s Services Agency. Both agencies are under the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

The center will serve Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw counties.

Officials say the pilot sites were chosen based on populations who experience overrepresentation in the child welfare system, high poverty rates, or lack of access to health, behavioral, and social services. Geographical diversity was also a factor.
