SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The Chippewa Luce Mackinac Community Action Agency is among the first grant recipients of a new program focused on bringing more locally grown food to schools, hospitals, and other institutions.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development created the Good Food for Michigan Project, which is granting CLMCAA more than $16,000 and support services. The money will be used to increase the amount of Michigan-grown and produced foods served at senior nutrition sites and in the Meals On Wheels program. The funds will also help the organization further develop relationships with farmers in the region.

The CLMCAA serves about 165,000 meals a year to seniors through its network of14 senior nutrition centers.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
