LANSING, MI (AP)-- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is asking deer hunters to support a hunger-relief program when buying their licenses.
Sportsmen Against Hunger has been working since 1991 to supply wild game to needy people. More than 1.1 million Michigan residents are seeking food assistance. Enough venison was donated to food banks last year to provide more than 100,000 meals at food banks and soup kitchens.
Anglers and hunters can donate anywhere from $1 to $20 to the program when buying licenses. The vendor adds the donation amount to the purchase price.
The money is used to help cover costs of processing deer. Hunters who would like to give a deer to the program can visit its website to find the nearest processor. The site is www.sportsmenagainsthunger.org
